look what we baked!

Jacob Henry, born 9/17/09 at 11:30 p.m.. 7 pounds, 0 ounces and 19.5 inches, all of them exceedingly cute.

Of course, we immediately tried to eat him. Because he has CINNAMON SWIRL hair.

chicken legs!

And tiny CHICKEN LEGS, that we will happily dip in barbecue sauce.

But mostly because he’s the sweetest smelling thing we’ve ever cooked up, and I think equally smitten with us.

  6. Emily

My goodness, he’s beautiful! Most (like pretty much all) babies have an adorably sweet shrunken alien thing goin’ on, but not your Jacob. He’s just beautiful!

Hope you’re well. Take care, and try not to eat the little guy. ;)

  9. CONGRATULATIONS!!
Before the pictures loaded, I only saw the title of the post, and I thought it was going to be about a dish you and Alex collaborated on, and well, I suppose it *was* about that, but I wasn’t even thinking :-) Jacob is just perfect, thank you for sharing a photo of him with all of us.

  10. Amy

He is absolutely perfect. Congratulations! What a cutie. Everyone around me seems to be having their babies and I still have four weeks to go. It’s making me crazy! But so happy for you all. Enjoy those chicken legs and all the rest of him, too!

  11. Kate

  12. LIZ

Mazel Tov! What a way to start the new Year! Blessings for the new family.
I imagineJacob will only have home -made baby food. I made my daughters all of their baby food and now have the pleasure of making it for my Grandchildren!
Enjoy every tiring second. I’m sure your best cooking inspirations will come during those early morning hours as you pace the floor wishing Jacob would sleep!

  17. To be honest, your burst of posts recently made me think maybe you were having that last burst of energy before labor. So not totally surprising to me. But awesome. He’s beautiful, welcome to motherhood. :)

  30. meanders

  31. Michele

I don’t know why, but I thought you had another month to go. I was so surprised to see this post. I have never seen such a perfect little baby face. He just looks so content to be here. Congrats!

  32. Kelly Dwyer

Congrats! hope the brownies and snicker doodles helped ease the pain and get you the extra attention you were hoping for!! Im sure the nurses appreciated your thoughtfulness of baking something w/o chocolate!!

  33. Liz in Canada

So I usually say “aw, what a cute baby,” while inside I’m thinking “is he/she supposed to look like that…?” Not this time; he’s perfectly wonderfully adorable. Congrats to you both.

  34. Biggest congrats on your little boy — I’ve been following your blog since 2005 (and possibly earlier, I just can’t cross reference any earlier), and I’m so genuinely happy for you guys it would shock most people I know (I tend not to like the littles). While I will desperately miss your fantastic recipes and gorgeous photography, you definitely deserve a maternity leave! Best wishes!

  35. tina

this is one of the cutest babies i’ve ever seen! must be all the good food momma was eating :) congratulations & thanks for all the recipes!

  36. Oh, what fantastic news! I got chills reading your post because he is just so completely perfect. His sweet little face is just heart-melting. Best of luck to you in the next coming days and weeks. I hope he sleeps through the night starting NOW!

  37. Susan

Congratulations – a delicious bun and I love the cinnamon swirl! He looks like he’s saying “what are you going to bake for me, Mom?”. All the best!

  38. The most precious menu, I mean, birth announcement I have ever enjoyed. The most beautiful little guy baked. Thank you for sharing with your blog friends. Congratulations to you all. He is the best thing you’ve ever cooked up. You’ll never know another love like that.
    AmyRuth

  39. Alisha

He is so BEAUTIFUL. Seriously. I just want to put him and sweet little soft serve swirly head in a cone and eat him. CAVITIES!! GAH! Savor every second, though. You never knew the meaning of “time flies” before.

  40. You always have great recipes, but this time you’ve outdone yourself. You really did create a masterpiece. A precious child and lovely, lovely photos – that sweet sweet face and that swirly hair photo just made my day (after a rotten afternoon spent at the emergency room tending to a sprained ankle.) Now take some well deserved time off. Best of luck to you and your family.

  41. dru

Congratulations, Jacob Henry is a name that goes back a long way in our family, may your young man live long and enjoy the name. The new car smell lasts a long time. . . enjoy it.

So…what’s the menu for the bris?

  45. Nan

What a little miracle man! I’m so happy for you and Alex and for your MOM’S…the only thing better than being a mom is being a Grandma! I hope all went well and you’re okay – he is adorable – and has HAIR!!! So, so cute! Congratulations!!!! So now you can finally tell me what colors!! I can’t wait to get started on his quilt! xo, Nan

  46. Emma

Oh my, he is just gorgeous! Congratulations to you both! The face, and the hair, and the legs… sigh… he’s just perfect. You make me want babies, Deb!

  47. CONGRATULATIONS! What a great looking little man, and he’s got no idea how lucky he is. I’m a little envious of the kitchen smells he’s going to have memories of. Best wishes for all of you.

  48. Stephanie

MAZEL TOV!!!!! And a beautifully sweet and happy and healthy new year!

I was on your site following the honey cake recipe! (Made your Challah last night!) Accidentally closed it out and, good fortune good fortune here’s what comes up!

Just born and so much personality in his eyes. The best (and worst) is yet to come. Much love and happiness to all three of you. (AND who said that one plus one equals two. Tsk, tsk, tsk.)

  53. Angela

Congrats to everyone, especially Jacob Henry! You will have the best birthday cupcakes of anyone in school!

That newborn baby smell is… I can’t think of the right word but it’s intoxicating.

  54. He is SO precious! I love his hair…and his little face! Babies that come when they’re supposed to are SO different from preemies, which is what I’m working with this month in the NICU. To me…he looks huge. :-) Congratulations!

  55. congratulations! what a beautiful and peaceful face and countenance emanating from this new little person. I am a lurker up until now – love your blog, thank you for sharing all your richness with us here.

  56. Cat

A blessing to you Jacob – may your life be peaceful and full of laughter!

Congratulations Deb – do ask if you need internet help.

    He’s v. handsome.

  57. Amy

De-lurking to say congratulations! The cinnamon swirl is perfect, but beware as he gets older that it doesn’t cause all kinds of havoc on a haircut laying down right. I speak from experience!

Such a handsome little man– snorgle his feet and the back of his neck until your home rings with his laughter. It’s the best sound in the world.

  58. Stiffler

    congratulations to the new parents!
    awesome head of hair.
let us know if the nurses enjoyed your baked goods.
i’m wondering what kind of birthday cake post we will see here in about a year from now.

  59. Mary

What a beautiful baby! I’ve been curious how you would handle the baby announcement; have always loved your posts, your humor, and your photos. This one beat all expectations! :)

  60. Oh, the joy of checking in to see what’s new and to find the ultimate recipe! He’s beyond beautiful! What a treat to see him!

I know you have lots of advice coming every which way but just one more….be easy with yourself in these first few weeks (months?). Don’t rush to start posting. Just enjoy this amazing experience. We’ll be here when you are ready to come back :)

  61. Kirsten

Oh my goodness congratulations! He does have cinnamon swirl hair! Our is coming later this year, and I’ve loved reading about your food journey through pregnancy. So glad he healthy and you’re well. We’ll be happy to have you back to ourselves eventually but enjoy your new little one now!

  62. What an angel! He’s gorgeous, and I’m so happy for you two! I never thought I could have so much love for someone until I had two of my own children. Congratulations Mommy! (and Daddy :))

  63. Oh yay! FINALLY! God I never thought that little guy was going to make an appearance. How adorable. Cute right from the get go! Congratulations and enjoy this wonderful time together. It’s a part of your life you’ll never forget.

  64. Elizabeth L.

Oh so sweet! He is the nicest-looking newborn ever!

Only advice–sleep when he sleeps. Do Not Post! we’ll all be here in a while when you come up for air.

  65. Shauna

Oh my gosh, he is just so dang adorable!! I am so happy for all of you – what a wonderful gift as Fall approaches!! While I am a bit biased about September birthdays (having one myself!), I must say that he looks to be just about the cutest September baby I have ever seen. CONGRATS!!

Now – get off the computer and get back to showering love and attention upon that baby!! (In between your naps, of course!)

  66. gail

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. Love the pics. Congratulations! Enjoy every second. It all goes too fast….you’ll forget the bad stuff and remember the good!!

  67. Bobanda

Oh my! Congrats! He is the most adorable just-born baby I’ve ever seen, and I LOVE the name Henry. I had a hunch when I checked the post that this was the one, and as always, you fail to disappoint! All the best to you all!

  68. Congratulations! So much hair! Good to take pics of it all now, cause they don’t tell you it falls out and then slowly comes back. What’s up with that!? Enjoy Jacob! They grow-up so fast!

  69. Wait, your baby. Is here? But didn’t you just get pregnant like a week ago? Haha, time flies (I’m sure not fast enough for you). Great to see you posting – much quicker than I’d imagine, even just for an announcement. :)

  70. PC

What a wonderful start for a sweet new year! Mazel tov!

And incidentally, Deb, I have been using your challah recipe weekly ever since my fiancé started rabbinical school. Everyone thinks I’m a natural-born rebbetzin now! (Unfortunately, this means I can’t credit you for my skills, so I am doing that here!)

  71. Hall

Congratulations!!! It seems so fast, like barely a blink since your last post. Did the nurses like the snickerdoodles and cheesecake brownies?

  72. Donutty

    beautiful!!!
there are long days and nights ahead and even if you don’t feel particularly beautiful remember that you are the perfect mom for this little treasure.

  73. dana

we are all smitten!! and look at all that hair!! my goodness! (my daughters were pretty bald.)

your best recipe ever. and not to be recreated by anyone.

  74. erin

Congratulations! I kept checking back every day like, “did she have the baby yet? how ’bout now? now?” Cinnamon swirl hair indeed! He is so cute!

  75. I hope you enjoyed your bourbon shot after delivering such a handsome little bundle; he has a beautiful face and head full of hair. I’ll be sure to enjoy a Jameson in Jacob’s name. Congratulations to you, Alex, and the rest of your family! The post title was great, by the way.

  76. Congratulations!!!!! He is truly beautiful. Although I must say your post brought up a terrible nightmare from my childhood. When I was 7 I dreamed my grandma was barbecuing my baby brother’s little chicken legs for our dinner. I couldn’t even look at her for weeks! I’m so happy for you guys, praying you get the sleep you need :)

  77. MK

Cuddle up with that babe and enjoy every minute.
I remember making fresh raspberry sherbet the day before my first was born — busy busy busy.
But getting to know this new person in your life will take time and patience and sleeping when he sleeps — adapting your rhythms to his.
Throw the idea of “back to normal” out of your head and life will be good! You are headed toward a new normal — and it’s a wonderful journey.

  78. My dear Deb, he is totally delicious. I even got tears in my eyes. I used to call my grandsons “deliciously naughty” when they were little.

I hope all are well and snuggled up together. Nella

  79. Nicole S.

Congratulations, he’s gorgeous! And the fact that his cinnamon swirl hair matches his announcement on this blog – too poetic for words.

  80. How wonderful! Mazal tov! What a sweet gift for Rosh Hashana. Wishing you all the best for a sweet, healthy and happy New Year with your new addition! He is absolutely adorable!

  81. Sweets by Jas

Congratulations Deb and Alex and wishing your new born Jacob a warm welcome to his new home! Happy Rosh Hashana as well! May you all be blessed with great health and lots of love!

  82. Grapeful

“But mostly because he’s the sweetest smelling thing we’ve ever cooked up, and I think equally smitten with us.”

The sweetest quote ever. Hope he inherits your kitchen and photography talents!

  83. arlen

Thank you Thank you for sharing this special time with us. Jacob is so lucky to have you both as parents. Congratulations ! I’ve been waiting for the right time to comment. And this is it! “Deb had her baby” is going on my calendar.
Congratulations your baby is so beautiful.

  84. Congrats from the mom of another Jacob! You are embarking on an amazing journey! Enjoy even the tough and sleepless moments–because you will blink and he will be 1–and then you will blink again and he will be taller than you are!

  85. Rebecca

Deb and Alex, Congratulations! Deb, I’ve been following you since the iVilliage days, and you really are a role model to many of us. Mazel tov, shana tovah and best wishes for a year (and life) filled with joy and happiness.

All the best for the young family! Many greetings from Vienna

  87. Kim

That might just be the loveliest baby I’ve ever seen on my computer screen. Stay out of Oklahoma for a while or The Pioneer Woman will want to keep him!

  88. Oh Deb, he is the cutest little cinnamon swirl-headed baby ever. He’s just gorgeous! Congratulations, Mazel Tov, and what a freaking PERFECT New Year’s gift. Shana Tova to your whole family.

  89. Rochelle

Welcome, little one! He is stunning! Stunning. He’s definitely the best thing you and Alex have concocted yet. He looks soulful and wise.

I look forward to reading about this new chapter in your journey that you have been gracious enough to share with us all these years. Cheers from this long-time reader in Seattle!

  90. Beyond precious! Congratulations proud mama and papa! Welcome to parenthood, officially! his swirly hair reminded me of my son’s when he was born…it’s a minor battle to comb swirled hair.

    Best wishes!

  91. Rachel

Adorable baby. Can’t get over how much hair he has (more hair then I had when I was 1 year old).

But I can’t help but wonder – did your bribes work?

  92. Delia

Congratulations to the three of you. I know you’ll be filling his belly with yummy things in the years to come as he fills your heart with a love you’ve never known!

  94. Monica

Oh, the baby smell … I do miss that! (Mine are 8 and 10 now.) My favorite thing about the front carrier was being able to smell (and kiss) their little heads so easily. Enjoy!

  101. L Z

He is ADORABLE!!! And so tiny!

    Congratulations!!

How did the bribery brownies and cookies go over??? I’m sure the nurses were just as enamored with the baby as the baked goods!

  102. HE’S GORGEOUS! Congratulations, I am so, so happy for you! and totally in awe of your ability to blog and be pregnant at the same time. I have two children, and my blogging is inconsistent at best. Good luck, keeping up with it! We love your recipes! But most of all: ENJOY THIS TREASURE!

  104. nana in the kitchen

Over the past year I have drooled, oooed and aahed over your recipes, pictures and posts, but never cried with joy as I do tonight over your latest post–I am so happy for you; many kisses to the sweet “bun from the oven”.

  105. Kelsey

He is the most precious thing ever! He’s definitely one of the cutest babies I’ve seen and I have three nieces that he’s competing with ;), plus I also work around a ton of babies!

  106. Lisa

He is beautiful, congratulations! Just wait until he is a teenager, him ( and his frinds) will love having a mom who can cook and bake like you. Enjoy every single moment with him, even the crying ones. It goes by way too fast and don’t ever wish any stage away. Enjoy every moment to its fulliest.

  107. So cute, especially that cinnamon swirl hair. Lots of congratulations to the three of you.

You’ll have to save this post to show Jacob when he’s older – how lovely to have over 600 people from across the globe writing to welcome you into the world!

  108. Amanda

SUCH beautiful pictures, with a mom and dad who can cook (and shoot) like that he is a lucky one alright – congratulations, hoping for the best for all of you! Amanda

  114. Dawn

Oh my GAWD, Jacob is GORGEOUS!

I’m not a cook — I only come to your website to look at the beautiful pictures of food (I mean, I am Jewish after all — I enjoy food; just can’t MAKE it well) — but I had to comment this time.

I have NEVER seen a more gorgeous baby. They’re usually all scrunchy-faced and stuff, but Jacob is handsome at birth. He’s going to steal many hearts with that face.

    Congratulations! Mazel Tov!

  115. Leighann

Oh! What a New Year’s present you just got! Congratulations to you and Alex on sweet Jacob’s birth.

p.s. You get your glass of wine yet? ;-)

  116. Barbara

What a cute kiddo you have. Usually newborns aren’t so attractive the first few days – but yours is absolute perfection. Enjoy this amazing time of discovery and bonding with your son – its something you will always treasure.

  119. gimletgirl

    Congratulations!! Welcome, Jacob!
When my son was born, he had similar swirl – we used to refer to the center of it as “where Evan starts.”

  120. Diane

OMG…that’s just wonderful. You can’t cook something any better than that. Look at all the hair…and the beautiful eyes. Congrats!

  121. JC

Many, many congratulations to you. Hold him, sniff him and never put him down. Pull up his blankets just to touch his tiny feet. May every moment be burned into your memory!

  122. Linda Susanna

  124. Archie

Long-term lurker here…congratulations on your gorgeous new baby! I love reading your blog…this little one is very lucky to have a mum like you!

  125. Deb, congratulations! Now, watch out for all the mommy bloggers who are going to try to bombard you with parenting “techniques” and will tell you that your parenting is incorrect, even though you’re an excellent parent. I guess it’s jut one of the things about blogging, you’ll hear everyone’s opinions, but the best part is that you’ll take everything with a shaker full of salt and use what you think is best. I think your son is going to be a lucky person! He’s got an awesome mom who bakes! Too bad my mom can’t bake for her life, and now refuses for me to teach her because she doesn’t want to learn how to bake from a 17 year old.

Oh, never do that to your son. If he knows how to do something that you don’t- let him at least try to teach you. Us teens are actually smart sometimes. :)

Anyway, have a great time with your son!

Oh, and don’t forget to have a drink! I remember you saying how annoying it was that you couldn’t drink, but I think you overcame that urge by baking / cooking up some delish recipes!

  126. ines

oh my goodness, he is the sweetest, loveliest little boy and the swirl atop his dear head reminds me of my son when he was born. enjoy all his little bits. congratulations!

  127. Tama

ADORABLE! Congrats on your little “muffin man”. I thought your photography was great but now I see it truly is the subject matter that is beautiful.

  128. Erin

Oh he is so gorgeous! As a first time pregnant woman, I’ve been having so much fun reading about your preparations for your little one. Congratulations to you and your whole family!

  129. Wow. That is some sweet smitten LOVE….What a beautiful baby…
Truly, I don’t think I’ve ever commented on your blog- I read it a few times a week but I couldn’t help but mention his sweetness!

    You done good.

  130. John

Congratulations! Deb and Alex.He looks like a keeper. Just think he might actually live to see the beginning of a new century. I pray we can somehow do better with our stewardship of the planet we call earth and hand him a world in which he can live a healthy and prosperous life.

  131. nancy williams

  134. Oh Deb I don’t believe it, to think he’s been in the world since Thursday and I only just found out (though I suppose time differences play a part here, so it’s not so long when I work it out)! Congratulations! He is so beautiful, and I don’t even like babies. It feels like you’ve been pregnant forever, but somehow it never sank in that there would be an actual BABY at the end of it – but there is, and he’s perfect. I’m so happy for you!

  135. Janet

A wonderful addition to the family! I look forward to seeing lots more wonderful recipes once you get some sleep, however you will be amazed what the brain can conjure up during those middle of the night feedings and you are totally exhausted. Cheers to you and Alex!

  136. sarah

Congrats! What a REALLY beautiful baby boy. Not all newborns are cute, but I have to tell you he is darling! I have three boys myself and they are heavenly. ENJOY!!

  137. amanda

i’m not gonna lie… i do not think all babies are cute. some are, infact, rather grotesque looking.

however, YOUR baby is positively SO flipping adorable that he brought an actual tear to my eye this morning. CONGRATS!

  138. Sharon

Mazal Tov! What a wonderful way to kick off 5770. Rosh Hashannah will never be the same. Enjoy every second, even the sleep deprived, spit up, and poop explosion ones.

Did the nurses like the brownies and cookies?

  139. Melissa

Ah, well I’m not the first to delurk and also not the last for this, I’m sure – but how could I not! Too much ADORABLE! Hope everything went well and you get some sleep (and some real drinks!) in between cuddling your cinnamon swirl boy.

P.S. Many new moms I know, myself among them, seem plagued by an infinite list of guilt-inducing to-dos. I hope that for you this blog won’t be among them! I for one will be happy to see your next post whenever it appears, be that days, week or even (gasp!) months … I would rather re-read your old posts and know you are enjoying time with your new son!

  199. Millie

First off, congrats on one of the cutest little boys I think I’ve ever seen! He’s beautiful!!

Secondly, just FYI, when I first clicked on this post from my Google Reader, it first brought me to your site, and then directly into a completely bogus “Your computer has a virus, buy our BS product and we will fix it for you” kind of site. Luckily my software engineer husband quickly swooped in to save the day, and told me to let you know what was happening cause he thinks your site got hacked. Just wanted to let you know…Congrats again!!

  200. Kim

First off, congrats on the new baby!
Secondly, what happened to Millie (1136), happened to me. Luckily I was able to close it down using task manager, so no harm done.

  201. Shira

Congratulations! He is absolutely GORGEOUS!! All the hair is soo cute! Makes me want to wake up my 9 month old and give her a big hug. Enjoy him!! May he bring you lots and lots of happiness!!

Thanks for putting this site on the market! Congratulations on the new addition to the family!

I’m sure the nurses enjoyed your goodies and I hope you’re getting lots of rest and lots of quality time with the little guy.

  235. Precious! What an absolutely beautiful baby. So delighted that he has arrived safe and sound, and can’t wait to hear of his exploits in the kitchen (I know it will be awhile, but somehow I suspect mom will have tales to tell!). Sleep well, one and all.

  236. Susan

I had the same thing happen as Millie, #1136. I was interupted by a window msg that said my computer could have a virus..and it started attempting to download software to fix “my” problem. I shut down immediately and shredded by cache and cookies. It’s happened twice here. Thought I’d let you know as Millie did.

  237. Debra

    Hi Deb,
Absolutely beautiful baby!!! I’ve been waiting anxiously all month for your wonderful news. Jacob is just adorable. Cinnamon Swirl hair, chicken legs, and smells good to boot, just made my day!! You have already started creating wonderful memories with your family!!

In case you ever have the time to read this….My first is Jacob Douglas Moore – originally to be Jacob Henry for his Great Great Grandfather. Once Dad found out he was a boy….Douglas took the place. Moore was for his great grandpa so that was okay, too. Finally, I had my Henry 7 years later. Henry will be 6 in November and I can’t believe how the time has flown. Enjoy every single moment as they are better than anything you could ever create in your kitchen. He is beautiful you should be so very proud of your little cinnamon bun.

  260. Becky

Congratulations! I know some people say that every newborn is adorable – but I’m not one of those. But your son is truly one of the cutest I’ve seen!!! So, I have to ask, did buttering up the nurses with baked goods help?

Congrats on the beginning of a wonderful journey full of great memory-making.

  317. Soph

He is so cute!!! Well done! You are quite the baker!! ; ) Enjoy every second – it really does go by so fast! My little guy is 8 weeks today… and has doubled in size!!! I didn’t see it happen, but that little newborn is no more! And they do eventually sleep through the night!! Have fun and … this might be a bit personal … but don’t keep emotions in – let them out, vent… It helps. And keep communicating with your hubby – they have a tendency to feel a bit left out… Conngratulations again : )

  318. Rachel

  327. Oh my word. I came here to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your recipes, since I used two this past weekend for birthday cakes (the yellow cake and the ginormous chocolate cake, halved, that you made for your father in law) and they were wonderful and awesome and by the way, the chocolate goes as well with panforte ice cream as…you and cooking? But then I come here and find roughly the cutest baby ever instead! That baby is already Gap baby cute, and it’s what? Like a few minutes old in that last picture? You have a heartbreaker on your hands, I just hope you see that. Congrats! I’m assuming you’re taking a break from posting and that’s a heart breaker for me, but lord knows I wouldn’t have the slightest thought anything but staring at that child all the live long day, so I hope you get to do tons of that.

  365. was just checking in for a new recipe and look who i found! hope the baked bribes helped through the delivery. how appropriate that he has cinnamon swirl hair and the post you announced your pregnancy was “cinnamon swirl buns + so much news”

  366. Jessie

Congratulations and enjoy each and every delicious moment. The photos are beautiful and touching. I remember pretending to chew on my daughters legs when she was small. Now, at age 4 (tomorrow), she doesn’t let me try to nibble but does join my in the kitchen to cook and bake.

  367. mamabigdog

Mazel Tov to all three of you! What a great name you chose. I hope everything went well, and I hope you have help at home so you’re not feeling overwhelmed. Remember to take care of yourself, and make sure you have a sympathetic shoulder to cry on when you need it. These little guys are so great, but it’s a real rollercoaster too.

  368. Wow. It took me – no kidding – FOUR HOURS to get into your site, everyone has been leaving so many adoring comments.

So, I will say… CONGRATULATIONS on the oh-so-impossibly-cute bundle of joy!

  369. Dorrie

Congratulations! Wishing you all long, happy and healthy lives together. He is adorable. My nephew has that same hairstyle. It reminded me of a Jiffy Pop container when he was born (he’s a blondie). He still has it 13 years later and it looks very cool!

  370. Congratulations, he is a good looking baby! My friend had a baby a few months back that was born with a ton of hair just like your son and I think it adds to the cuteness, but be prepared to hear a lot of “whoa, your baby has hair!” comments- I know she’s sick of them. Enjoy and I hope you are managing to get some sleep here and there :)

  371. Kat

Aww, he’s a cutie! Congratulations, and may he live a long and happy life :) Hope mama is recovering well! Hope the bribe cookies and brownies were a hit… they sure look like they were as Jacob is just perfect !

  372. He seriously might be the most adorable little baby ever!! Well done you two, congratulations!!! I’m sure you’ll have many, many happy memories with that little guy … I imagine many of which will come in the kitchen.

  373. Meegan

My husband and I are trying to decide if we are 100% done having babies, as we are contemplating a vasectomy. We were talking about it today. TODAY. And then you post the most delicious baby pictures EVER! That SWIRL! It’s KILLING ME! Beautiful, beautiful baby. Congratulations!

  374. CONGRATS!!! I have to say that he is truly a beautiful baby! Ok, ok, all babies are cute, but some are cute JUST BECAUSE they’re babies. Jacob? More than just that! And that swirl? YUM!

  375. Melissa

EEEEE! He’s so cute! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Can’t wait to read all of the baby food recipes in future posts! Hope you are on the mend from the delivery. Sleep when he sleeps and enjoy every single moment.

  376. cindi

what a gorgeous baby! i remember reading your blog when you were a single gal living in the city – to meeting your husband – and now this! i’m so happy for you!

  377. Jen

Oh my gosh he’s so CUTE! Newborns are usually, well, GOOFY at best but he really REALLY looks like a cute little boy! And love love love the name. Henry was one of the names I had in case my daughter had been a boy and Jacob is my son’s middle name. Yay for the old fashioned names!! Mazel Tov!

  378. Emily

he looks absolutely adorable! Definitely way above the average, especially for a newborn! And believe me, I know…I’ve got two, and they weren’t that cute that early! :)

  379. What can I say that hasn’t already been said? You both are blessed with a healthy, beautiful, son. May he continue to be a source for joy, laughter and peace to you both and may he find excellent health, much happiness, love and fulfillment in his life. Health and peace be unto you and yours.

  380. Liz D.

Well, gee, Deb. Not that I could say anything that hasn’t already been said, but I too wanted to add my well wishes and congratulations to your page. I think it is great how you have let all of your followers know about this important piece of your life. I look forward to hearing what baby SK likes to do in the kitchen!

  381. Samantha

Congrats Deb & Alex, these pictures blend in perfectly with all the other amazing looking ones on this site. No need to tweak this recipe :)

  382. Cindy

Somehow I just knew when I checked in on you today that there was going to be an announcement. Well done to Deb and congratulations to you both! He is just gorgeous!

  383. Chana

Mazal tov! He is just beautiful. Tizku l’gadlo l’Torah, l’chupah ulemaasim tovim! (He should grow up to torah, chupah, and good deeds!)

  384. Annabelle

Hey he’s stunning! Newborns are not usually that cute- you’ll have to buy him one of those t-shirts ‘lock up your daughters’!!! Congrats guys!

  385. Jo

Hi Deb, this is my first post on your foodblog. I’ve been lurking for a while now and I can’t help but say may congratulations on the birth of your beautiful son. Looking at those lovely pictures brings back memories from nearly 10 months ago when our son was born. It’s such a wonderful feeling that is absolutely indescribable. Take care……

  386. Ashleigh

Congratulations! I hope he will be half as inspired from your cooking as you appear to be from your mother’s. Nothing reminds you of home like the meals you grow up with.

  387. Sally

I was thinking about you and wondering if the day had finally arrived. Congratulations! He is absolutely beautiful, and thanks for sharing the photos with us!

  388. Sd

Congrats Deb, Wish you all, ALL the happiness, good health and prosperity humanly conceivable:) He is the most beautiful person I have seen in a long time:)

  389. Ping

Aww… Congratulations! He looks lovely!! Makes me want to have one too… :) Hope you are doing well too and will be back in action in no time! Take care.

  390. Dora

Beautiful. The best thing you’ve baked yet. Looks like a lot is going on in that little brain of his already, judging by the wise eyes. Congratulations and enjoy every second.

  391. Bridget

Deb, Alex… Jacob is insanely, painfully beautiful and perfect!
Well done and crongratulations – what a milestone!
Love and luck to all 3(!) of you.

  392. Donna bee

Oh my goodness. I can definitely picture that new baby smell. It’s one of my favourites! Sweet and milky and pink, smells like pick. Whether it’s a boy or a girl. Anyways, Congratulations of this beautiful boy! I love babies but I know that they kind of look like aliens for the first few days BUT your baby has defied this. He is adorable, wide-eyed and cinnamon-swirled.
Congratuations to you and Alex. *sigh*

  393. Melissa in Mississippi

Love your site and try your recipes all the time! Good luck trying to get through all these comments before Jacob turns 3. Get ready for a fabulous new life full of a lot more love, laughter, and poo poo! Our hilarious 20-month old is all the entertainment we ever need!

  394. Congratulations Deb and Alex!!! So glad your little boy has finally arrived!!! He is absolutely beautiful, and he definitely looks like he’ll be Mommy’s little kitchen helper :) God Bless :)

  395. Paula

Congratulations- he is a yummy honey!!! Don’t feel bad if you don’t get around to baking, cooking etc. in the first few months. There’s breastfeeding, adjustments for sleep or lack thereof, trying to get back into pre-baby clothes, etc. etc. etc. The months will fly by quickly, take plenty of pics and enjoy one of the best (and most exhausting) roles you’ll ever have. All the best to you and your family!!

  396. Meg

Comment #2,184 – I can smell him from here. Delicious! I have a cousin who just love-love-loves newborn babies. She says when she holds them, they remind her of a warm little loaf of bread. And that’s about right, now, isn’t it?

    Enjoy!

  397. Oh. My. God. Your son is the CUTEST newborn I’ve ever seen!! Most newborns creep me out a bit (can you tell I don’t have kids yet?) but he is absolutely adorable!!!! Congratulations! I hope you had an uneventful delivery.

  398. Brenda

Talk about instant love!! Enjoy this wonderful new adventure in your life. I’m also impressed that you posted Snickerdoodles on September 16 and then delivered on September 17 and had pictures up on September 19. Enjoy enjoy enjoy!!

  399. Terry

Jacob Henry is a beautiful, beautiful boy! Thanks for sharing with your readers and also friends (obviously your friends by reading these comments).
    CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

  400. Tammy

Also delurking to wish you congratulations on birthing this beautiful baby boy. He’s one of the most gorgeous newborns I’ve ever seen – so smooth-faced and he looks like a real person! Best wishes for a quick recovery. And, if you’re breast-feeding and it hurts – it’ll get better really soon (like, after 2 weeks). Take it from one who knows :).

  401. Natalie

So many heartfelt congratulations to you!! Your life will never be the same, and you’ll never even remember how you lived life before him. :)

  402. csbrown

  405. Charlotte

Bravo and congrats! He’s so gorgeous! I hope he brings you both as much joy as our little boy has brought us (he also has a cinnamon swirl!).

  406. Heidi

Congrats if you ever get this far through the comments with your newborn and fabulously successful blog :D Cute kiddo; really. I don’t see many babies that I think are cute. Good luck!

  407. If you get through all these comments, I just want to add my congratulations. And to say how exceedingly cute your little boy is. All the best to you and your family.

  408. Kari D

  411. Karen

  414. Great job with the new little one. I am sure that it is your best creations to date. One thing that help me baking with a little one is putting the baby in a wrap. Check out the various slings or wraps that are out there. It is a lifesaver in the kitchen.

    Trev

  415. Linda

Congratulations! Welcome little Jacob to a wonderful world. He is so cute, you could just eat him with a spoon, to use a phrase my Grandmother used to say.

  420. Joyce

Congratulations! I was offline for a few days and specifically went searching on twitter to see if you had posted about the baby yet! He’s gorgeous and I wish for you all the pure joy that my boys have brought to me. Enjoy every second!

  421. Congrats! He’s beautiful … objectively, not just in Mom and Dad’s eyes. :)

If this were to turn into a mommy blog, I for one would not mind. I know you’ve heard it a million times, but enjoy this time. It’ll be gone before you know it.

  422. jill

congratulations! I just made my husband look and said ‘cutest baby ever. Really–cuter, as a newborn than Declan (our son).’ He begrudgingly agreed.

  423. I’ve been following this blog for the past few months and thoroughly enjoy your recipes and beautiful food photography. I thought I’d say hi, and congratulations on the new baby boy!

And thanks for the inspiration, this blog always inspire me to make something delicious.

That cinnamon swirl is adorable! Welcome Jacob!

  425. Jessi A

Congrats!!! He is so adorable. Enjoy every single minute. It goes by so fast. My oldest started kindergarten this year and I feel like just yesterday he was a baby.

  426. Allison

Hi. I never comment on blogs I read but I’ve enjoyed following you guys and this seems like an occassion to say thank you and good luck. Congratulations!

  427. EEEEEEEEEEEEEE …. darling darling baby! You did good Deb … pulling this magical thing out of your oven! Your best creation yet. A million congrats and loads of love for this newest edible cutie :)

  428. Oh my goodness, Deb, that is the most delicious thing you have ever baked! He’s like a sucker punch to my ovaries. I think you need to add an obligatory baby photo to every post.

  429. Valerie

First thing I checked when I got back into town was your blog to see if the bun was out of the oven!! Congratulations on such a beautiful baby boy! Pinch those cheeks and nibble those toes (with or without BBQ sauce!)
Hope dad is holding up well, too!!

  430. TATYANA

Mazal Tov Deb, Alex, grandparents. Thank G–d for this gorgeous, delicious and healthy baby. I can’t wait for more pictures of this adorableness.

  433. MelissaBKB

  435. Wow – congrats. So much hair !!! We still try to eat piggies….enjoy him as the time flies, and I know you don’t believe it, but it seems like yesterday that Sofia was born and now she is 16 months.

  436. Jenn

Congratulations!!!!! Enjoy and cherish all the little moments, sometimes what you think is just a small milestone ends up being a BIG one you will never forget. My daughter will be 3 at the end of October and my son will be 1 at the beginning of Oct. Each year seems to go by faster than the one before it! :)

  437. Congratulations! I work at a maternity home, so I see a lot of babies. That means it’s serious when I say he’s a looker! I love that last picture – precious!

  438. Lynne

    Congratulations!!! He’s GORGEOUS!

(and that’s coming from a grandma/Bubbie who thinks her two grandsons [one by birth] are the most gorgeous in the world!!)

    :D

Thanks for sharing your precious one with us…

  439. Aisha

Congratulations! Mabrook (Arabic)! Mubarak ho (Hindi/Urdu)! Mazal Tov! Félicitations (French, duh)! I can’t tell you how happy I am for both of you and wish you all the best in your new life as the proud parents of the cutest little Jacob “Cinnamon Swirl” Henry I’ve ever seen. I hope the delivery went well and that it didn’t gross you out enough to decide not to have another on ever ever ever!

Your little bundle of joy got a double dose of blessings, being born in the month of Ramadan and so close to Rosh Hashana (am I missing some Christian/Buddhist/Hindu etc holidays as well?) May he be showered with tons more blessings throughout his long long life, may he always be protected, and may he always remain God’s lovely and loving gift to his parents.

OK enough seriousness… So what’s the trick to having such a cutey pie? Baking insane amounts of cinnamon swirl buns while pregnant? Or does the prep start a lot earlier with heavy doses of Pasta Puttanesca? ;)

  440. jeanette

just to add to the chorus: congrats! he’s beautiful! and those chicken legs don’t have a chance of staying chickeny in your kitchen o’ sweets! :)

  441. Louise

Congratulations to you and your husband. Your baby Jacob is truly beautiful. I am sure you will treasure all the wonderful moments to come.

  442. Lauren

WOW! What a beautiful child! May he be happy and healthy all the days of his life :) Thank you for all the joy YOU bring to your readers, Deb — I started reading smittenkitchen on that very happy day you announced you had a ‘bun in the oven’ — and believe me, nobody will begrudge you a moment if we don’t hear from you for a while :) Now go soak up that new-baby smell! :)

  443. gab

  444. Congratulations. Our little boy is called Jacob too but he’s 16mths now – believe it’ll be no time till yours is that age too! Enjoy every minute of it. You might have to slow the cooking and baking down now just to squeeze in getting dressed!

  445. Dearest Deb and Alex, I’ve been religiously following your blog for months now, fascinated by your witty banter and gloriously drool-worthy photos. But never has your blog induced chicken skin (aka goosebumps) on my arm! I am immensely happy for your itty bitty freshly baked baby, he is too adorable AND his name AND his eyes AND his hair AND…pretty much everything about him. I hope he’s in good health as are you (and Alex)! Might I also add how impressed I am at you evene plady with food-related puns for Jacob Henry? LOVE it! You are indeed a true foodie ;)

  446. Congrats! What a beauty! Ha, I knew this would happen: As soon as I leave for holiday that baby is coming and I’m gonna miss out the whole thing… mm, I probably should have warned you, shouldn’t I?

Have fun with that new kitchen addition :)

  447. Katie

Have been reading but never commented before – I just had to say congratulations and honestly, your beautiful boy has the most amazing little person face, like he has been here for years already! Maybe he has an old soul, time will tell!

  448. Debbie Lee

OMG I absolutely love EVERYTHING you bake… but this particular little dish definitely takes the Cake! LOLOL! Huge Congrats heading your way!!

  449. Selkie

Deb and Daddy and Jacob Henry: I check the site a time or two a day, hoping for a new pic, a comment from Deb, wishing you all the best, and am IN LOVE with that guy in the last pic of yours… He is a startler!Love the early newborn pics but Can’t WAIT for some new pics! That infant “just born” look lasts only a few days, I found (two boys 21 and 25 yrs). Blessings, in the New Year…

  450. Julia

I hope the first week of life went well, congratulations! Beautiful images of a beautiful baby. And yes, newborns have the best smell of all time.

  451. Vickie

What a precious and gorgeous sweetie! Congratulations ~ and best wishes to all three of you. I want to press my face to that pretty hair and smell him…awhhh.

  452. Killian

Congratulations! I’m a long time lurker, but don’t post much. Welcome to the world, Jacob. Your mom will make you the best lunches in the whole school, and your dad will teach you to be a devoted chocoholic.

    Slainte!

  453. Mary Ann

    Deb and Alex,

It is times like these I wish I were a poet. I am not, so am sending these lovely words from “Simple Truths” by Kent Nerburn to you:

“A child, whether of your blood or someone elses, whether healthy or ill, whether beautiful or misshapen, is one of life’s greatest miracles. It opens your world into a new sunlight and is a gift greater than a dream.”

    Congratulation–enjoy the dream!

  454. Jackie

He is absolutely gorgeous! What a beautiful face! He’s a lucky little fellow as he will no doubt get to try all your yummy creations. Enjoy every moment!

  455. teal

    mmmm, delicious…..*grin*
he looks wonderful – and that hair!!

good luck with things, this first bit. remember – ask for help if things get rough!

  456. I have been following your blog for a long time now. I love food but not more than I love pics of cute babies! It’s a mummy thing. Before kids I swear I never went around oogling other peoples babies. Now that I am a mom myself I’d be shopping and it’s like I have baby radar. I guess because they remind me of my own at home and then I’ll start missing him….anyway congrats on your little one. Funny all your delicious posts and I never once said hi, one delicious baby and I rush over like crazy lady at the mall you don’t know who wants to hold your baby. What you haven’t met her yet? Hmm with a baby that cute I promise you soon will:-) Enjoy your cinnamon swirl

  457. nancy

Congratulations from a Canadian fan! My own little boys are now 20 and 15 respectively, the youngest of which is now a towering 6’2″. I can attest to the fact that they eventually lose that heavenly smell…but you never forget those chicken legs and the look in those intelligent little eyes as they stare up at you. Blessings on all three of you.

  458. Swati

Hey, CONGRATULATIONS to the proud parents and the grandparents of course.. yo!! you have a beautiful boy with those awesome cinnamon swirls. a baby can make all so happy, isn’t it. Enjoy the precious time, he will grow up so fast..

  459. mikaela

WOW, he’s so adorable! Congratulations to you and your husband, and to the little guy, wow he’s got a lifetime of good eating infront of him ;)

  460. Martyna

I’m not one to gush at babies, but that is one cute kid.I think twas the hair that did me in. Congratulations!

(Ps Love love love your site!)

  461. Laura

Another looooongtime lurker, first time poster coming out of hiding at the sight of your beautiful baby! To echo the sentiments of the rest, he is quite possibly the most adorable baby I have ever seen! Heartfelt congrats!

  462. Aimee

Never posted before, but Jacob Henry is one truly beautiful baby! Congratulations. I LOVED your comments about his cinnamon swirl hair (which is really is) and his chicken legs (which they are not). Congratulations!

  463. Ok, my turn, my turn… I saw this post when it had 100+ comments, then 850+, then more then a 1,000… I thought you had enough (can you ever when a baby is born?). But, am I going to be #2,501? OK, ‘nough ’bout me.
Really wanted to say “Congratulations!” and “Mazal Tov!” the second I saw that little hairy head. WHAT A CUTIE!
Hava Nagila. Happiness and health to you all.
    Nurit

  464. jill

Congratulations & Mazel Tov!!!! He is adorable and looks so happy already… maybe he knows the deliciousness that is in store for him (and for you)! What a wonderful way to welcome the new year – shana tova – may the years be sweet to you!!

  465. Yippee!!!!! He is a such a doll!! And what *gorgeous* hair! Congratulations, new Mama and Papa!!! Even though I am, oh, comment #2,506 or something like that, I just want to add my own wishes to this big pot-o-good wishes you have simmering for you and your family here on SK :) Muah! Muah!

  466. Bubbles

Oh my goodness! What a cutie! And all that hair. I would nom him in a heartbeat. Enjoy every sleepless moment of the next year of his being your sweet tiny baby. Before you know it, you’re looking down at this full on little person toddling around your house and going, “Who replaced my baby with this *kid*?”

  467. mooxes

    WOW! so cute!
The cinnamon swirl is dead center on the top of his wee head.
was he born on the predicted due date? (the swirl location, according the vietnamese mamas, indicates whether the baby was born early, late, or on time.)

i actually already congratulated you… about 1000 posts earlier… but i keep coming back the last couple of days and usually i get somewhat miffed when there isn’t a new recipe posted, but your cute baby post could probably stay up for another month and i’ll still be happy to see it!! he’s so cute!

  470. slamora

Congratulations, he is beautiful, and the sight of him makes me well up, probably because those days are well behind me. You can’t imagine how much your life has changed with his arrival. Prepare yourselves for an amazing adventure, where each day will bring new challenges and joys. Love every minute of it, because it’s over in a heartbeat!

  471. adriana

  474. Denise

Alex is absolutely handsome! I especially like the picture where it looks like he is smiling. I have been enjoying your recipes for quite some time…keep up the great work!

  475. Rosalie

He is so beautiful! I just want to bury my face in that addorable little neck and smell his sweet perfume-y self. Lucky you and lucky Jacob.

“Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” -Elizabeth Stone

Congratulations, and best wishes to you and your family! Little Jacob is utterly adorable, or uberly cute, as my teenager would say.

BTW, have you read “Amazing Baby” by Desmond Morris? It’s a great book!

  477. Jacob is darling and I just loved this post. My little guy (now 2) had the cinnamon swirl also and I lovingly referred to it as such:) Enjoy your sweet baby! Now I need to start looking at all these yummy recipes…I’m new to the blog.

  478. K Hose

Great parents you both will be. Stay happy and healthy together..like I do! Take great pleasure in every minute with Jacob. You will find “JOY”..years from now as well when you get to see and love his children.

  479. Irit

    Mazal Tov!
What a nice gift for the beginning of the new year!
It’s amazing how much sweetness a little thing like that can hold, and how much you can enjoy it, without having to go on a diet later! Indulge! ;)

  480. Kaje

Great day to have a baby. My twin nephews turned 4 the day your little dough-boy came into our world. May your little guy not be a picky eater and enjoy every last morsel you give him — you will prepare it with more love than you ever knew existed. Blessings.

  481. Sam

It is quite rare indeed to truthfully say a newborn is beautiful, but yours surely is. Congratulations on your sweet boy, he is perfect. And I just love his name, my youngest (now almost a year old!) has Henry for his middle name.

  482. Samantha

OMG. I have one just like that, born on the same date and time, but mine was 7# 3 oz, Stephen Anthony. Only he’s 25 now. :-)

I’m so happy for you. Welcome to the world little one.

  483. Mike

I am the proud uncle of two gorgeous little girls and three amazing little boys and I can still say… DAMN that’s one cute kid. :o) Congratulations Deb and Alex. You done good.

  484. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is truely beautiful.
My little had the “cinnamon swirl” thing too! She’s 4 1/2 months old now and it’s gone…they change sooooo quickly. Enjoy every moment!

  485. congratulations. what a handsome boy! i’ve only just recently found your blog and am so excited to work my way through your recipes/posts. my daughter is making your “ratatouille’s ratatouille” for a french class project. i blogged about your site on my own (http://www.gailmcglamery.com/page/2) , though i’m so new i doubt anyone is reading it yet. best wishes for mommyhood.

  486. Well let me be number 2,578!!!Whooooeeeeee what could be more fun than to be able to post your precious little dumplings photos on your blog and have all of us drooling over him. What a sweet little angel he is. Enjoy every single sleepless night and every nuzzle. And Jacob, Mumsie says, “Goochey coo!!!” :)

  487. Jess

OMG Deb he’s absolutely the bees knees. What a sweetheart. Congratulations to you three and make sure to post lots and lots of your arty photos of the little snack! BABIESSSS!

  488. SR

oh my, I have been following your blog(s) for years, since you started and before you met Alex…hard to believe that much time has passed. I am so happy for you both, he is precious!

  489. Maureen

Ok, but really! He is ADORABLE!!!!! Love the hair. Both my babies were born with tons of hair and I can’t imagine one without it. Enjoy your little bundle. They are a precious gift.

  490. i’ve been offline for awhile and wondering about your little one! Funny, I was at a soccer game yesterday(yes, you too will become one of these) and one of the mums thanked me for passing your site to her. I asked her if you’d had your baby yet, she looked at me kind of oddly.
Yet there I was, wondering about you and how your labour went.
Was it alright? He is gorgeous, a smitten little kitten for your kitchen.
Go and love him all up and forget about cooking for at least 3 weeks!
    Congratulations to you and yours.
ps.I am a doula so if you have any questions don’t hesitate!
    Dhana

  491. sara

i was on another page of the site, looking up a recipe i love, and i thought – hey i wonder if she had the baby? YAY YAY YAAAAY! that is one beautiful bebe. congrats.

  492. Danielle

OK, I’m not just saying this. I don’t know you, and I only recently discovered your excellent blog and phenomenal photographs. I’m not even a baby person, meaning someone who goes crazy over every baby they ever see. But that is one gorgeous infant you have there. Most babies come out looking like Winston Churchill. Yours came out looking like a future movie star!

  493. chicago_gal

auh….the lil’man is “sho shweet”. congrat’s and savor. they do not stay that size for too long. before you know it, he’ll be cooking with his Mama.

  494. Allison

Your son is absolutely beautiful! Most newborns are not very good looking, don’t get me wrong, I LOVE babies, but there is something about them being squished in a small space for 9 months, they usually come out with a smashed face or a cone shaped head (that fixes it self in time-hopefully!). All that to say, he is probably the best looking newborn I’ve seen. So congrats, savor every moment-this time next year will be saying something about “how fast the time flies” and “I just can’t believe…”.

  495. Lauri

I find it amazing that you got such a great photo of him with his EYES OPEN at a day or two old. Congrats on your beautiful boy. I hope he will share your passion for food from an early age. My daughter is four and I love to cook with her. She knows how to measure flour and crack eggs and loves to make crumb cake. When someone has a birthday at school she always tells mne if the cupcakes were homemade or store-bought… Oh and if by chance the first few weeks have been REALLY hard I can promise you it will get better shortly.

  496. Bea

Wonderful. Many many congratulations ! It’s the crème de la crème ! If you’re like me, you’ll love it, despite the puffy eyes! ;-) It gets better and better.

  497. Jenny

Congratulations! I have a 17 year old September 17th baby. I must say they are the best, and yes I am totally biased. Your son is beautiful, may he bring you the joy and happiness our daughter has brought us!

  498. K. Golding

Oh! What a sweet little boy. You can’t imagine how much you can love someone so new to you. My baby boy is 4 months old and I shed tears of joy at least 3 three times a week. They are truly a blessing. Congrats!

  499. dick

Heartiests congratulations. I was introduced to you from Pioneer Woman. I know you are going to be very busy making sure the little one gets fed good food right from the start. He is a little love indeed but how could it be otherwise with his parents.

  500. Mels

I already sent congratulations in my post on your delicious pretzal recipe…but I felt compelled to post here as well. I don’t know you personally, but as I fall further and further in love with your recipes, I have to say this is the most beautiful baby boy and congratulations again!! Mazel Tov and much joy ahead!

  501. marianne

awww, what an angelic little face! i’m SO happy for you! these past several months went by so fast, probably faster for me than for you trudging around with a humongous belly, but it’s incredible how quickly life shifts directions. so, in about 6 months, will we be seeing a variety of smashed food recipes? :)

  502. Mazal Tov, Mazal Tov! What a sweet way to bring in the New Year! May you all have a Shana Tova, blessed with health and happiness and lots of success.

  503. I know you like to skip to the bottom of the comments section, where people are more likely to have tried a recipe and make suggestions, but I just couldn’t quite commit to nine whole months of baking! But boy howdy, does it look like he was worth it!

As they say in the interwebs, he is “om nom nom”able! What great cooks y’all are! Congratulations! If any baby I bake is half as cute as yours (which seems unlikely, given that that might be the cutest baby I have ever seen–look at all that hair!), then I will consider myself a good baby baker.

  504. wow, your son is gorgeous! and that hair! you’re a complete stranger, but i’m so happy for you! I don’t have children yet, but am always so delighted to hear of other peoples new little bundles of joy :) Enjoy your little man!

  505. Aww…congratulations! I love the way he is looking at you (or who’s holding him in the last pic). I just have to crack up over the cinnamon swirl hair and chicken legs. My husband always tells our Jack Russel, he’s going to eat her delicious looking legs.

  506. Jenna

Oh my goodness!! I know many many people have said this, but he is ADORABLE!! Look at all that hair!! Thanks so much for sharing him with us!! I LOVE the name Jacob!!

  507. Shannan

Oh my GOSH! So many months we have been doing little dances around the oven waiting for this little sweet thing to cook up and I MISSED his being slid from the oven! Darn vacation!

Congratulations to the happy parents. Such a face on that boy! And that full head of hair! A lovely little concoction!

  508. Donna

How precious! Congratulations on your wonderful, handsome baby boy! He looks perfect…love your description of the little cinnamon swirl hair. Wishing your family a lifetime of shared happiness. Thanks for sharing with all of us who enjoy your postings.

  509. ooohhhhhhhhhhh I’m late in congratulating you! I’m smitten that your Jacob was born on the same day as my darling nephew! Now, I will never forget Jacob’s birthday! Congrats again!

  510. Congratulations on your gorgeous little one! I just discovered your delightful blog and already I’m a fan; I’m baking the oatmeal raisin cookies as I type this. :-)

  511. Debbie

What a precious baby!!! Congratulations!! They certainly add spice to life!!! Loooove your site!! Found it when looking for a Blondie recipe. Which is wonderful, especially with the bourbon!! Thanks for sharing your love of food!! Us foodies really appreciate it!

  512. Jami

He really is a handsome boy! So, so sweet. You are a champion for even posting one thing since then. I love your website and am making tons of pizza now! Anyway, congratulations and I hope you are all doing well.

  513. Tom

Ahhhhhhhha what a adorable little guy now you can get back to the normal life things like changing diapers, feeding and no sleep. (lol) Congrats and hope you and everyone are doing well.

  514. Mazel Tov! He is absolutely beautiful. Take advantage of the countless hours that he will want to spend sleeping on you these first few months… it is time you can never get back and what a wonderful memory! Also, don’t worry about what things don’t get done, they will always be there later. My husband too is absolutely infatuated with the smell of babies, even our youngest, 2 years old, even though she isn’t technically a “baby” anymore. So much hair, too!

  515. Kelly

Ahhh! So cute! & we have the same birthday, so that makes him even cooler!
haha Not that I’m biased or anything! :) Congratulations!

  516. andrenna

As comment 1681, I am a little late, but I still felt obliged to say congratulations on your little cinnamuffin. Superrrr cutttealicious.

  517. Menolly

i’m so incredibly late, but CONGRATULATIONS!! Thank you so much for sharing your pictures. He really is one of the most beautiful babies I’ve ever ever seen.

  518. the walnut

How wonderful! Your blog never fails to make me smile and I see you have something that will continue to make you happy for the rest of your days. Congratulations and Best wishes!

  519. Popped in looking for something to bake and saw this. Belated congrats!! I am 6 months pregnant and Jacob is one of our favorite names…he is absolutely darling!!! Love the photos.

  520. Lisa

I haven’t checked in for a while – so am just now seeing the beautiful new babe. He is gorgeous!!!! Congratulations! Enjoy :)

  521. liz

I’ve been out of town for the past month, so sorry for the belated congratulations!! How exciting, take lots of pictures because they grow like crazy!

  522. I must not check this blog enough but I am so happy I did today! Despite the fact that we want to teach kids it’s what’s inside that counts, your son is GORGEOUS! Well done. I had a C-section too, in June- my first, and also a son. It’s nice when they come out with perfectly formed heads and hair :) I wish I had a swing (you make them sound so nice) but alas our flat in London may be a bit small. I am wishing your family all the best. Mazel tov.

  523. Harleydude

I don’t check here often enough, either. Matzeltov! About time!

My wife had two C sections with the second being twins. Perfect heads on them all. My my Mom asked what was wrong with them. She had six naturally.

I can’t say enough about giving yourself time to recuperate.

  524. Congratulations on my behalf as well! I’ve been so busy that I haven’t been able to check your blog in a while and in the meantime little Jacob was born! How he’s cute! I’m sure that he’ll be in the dough cup up to his tiny elbows in no time. :) I wish all of you the best to come, both in life generally and of course from the oven as well! ;)

  525. Gina

Oh my gracious gravy!!!! I’m woefully behind on my blog reading (over 1000 items in Google Reader) but I made sure to visit here to see the Smitten Baby. Oh my gracious gravy…I said that once already, I know…he is PRECIOUS! I love the shot of his sweet little head! He is a beautiful baby – and as the mom of four, I know not all new babies are pretty – but yours? Absolutely beautiful!!! Congratulations! I trust your delivery went well and everyone is adjusting. A friend of mine told me this when my first was born almost 7 years ago and I had no idea what she meant…now, I get it… Enjoy every minute. Sometimes the days (and the nights) seem oh so LONG. But the years…the years are oh so SHORT.

  526. Brenda

“Sometimes the days (and the nights) seem oh so LONG. But the years…the years are oh so SHORT.”
Gina, you are oh so right. Mine’s 18 now and trust me, it’s true.
Deb, enjoy every sleepless night now and know that they won’t last forever. Sadly so.

  527. New to this blog – as of today acutally… But I HAVE to say how flippin’ cute your baby is… I could totally eat him too, if you guys leave any leftovers… :) SO PRECIOUS!!!! Congrats!!!

  528. helga

i haven’t been here for a while and look what i found among your amazing recipes!
congratulations from the bottom of my heart. a new mother myself, my son was born in july and when i think my heart can’t grow any bigger it doubles its size. i welcome you to the wonderful and profound bliss of motherhood, i know you’re as happy as i am. and thank you for the food, i’ve been coming here for a while now. when you see hits from iceland it’s probably from me or some of my foodie friends, we’re all crazy about you!

  529. CatherineB

I just found your blog and imagine my surprise when I found this post…your son and mine were born on the same day! So congrats…it was a great day to have a baby!

  530. Good God am I ever late to THIS party, but hearty congratulations to you! I hope you’re enjoying him to the max, my littlest baby was born in May and I just can’t quite believe how quickly this amazing period goes by. Enjoy all the snuggles you can! x

  531. Alissia

What a beautiful little baby with such a sweet little face! Our second is due in April and I can’t wait to see what he looks like! Congratulations on the safe passage through such a life-changing event! Babies are the greatest thing ever.

  532. Cynthia

Oh dear, he’s sweet as can be and just 2 days older than my daughter!!
Keep taking pictures, because they change soooo fast!
A real recommender, baby swimming!! Too fun for words (not sure if you have that in the US, but if you do, GO!)

  533. Evelyn

Wow…I clicked “Surprise Me” on the left and this is what I got…congrats on your best creation! This made me laugh and smile today :-) Thanks for sharing!

  534. Wow, um, quite a bit of comments. I just happened to stumble upon this post in the Surprise Me! adventure i’m on. Our little Isaac was born on the 17th as well, but in December. He was also 7 lbs exactly and 19.5 inches long. He also has swirly, twirly hair. Aren’t they the best?

  535. Carrie

It’s incredible how much he still looks like he did on Day 1. My 14-month-old looks utterly and completely different from his newborn photos, but Jacob is still so very… baby Jacob!

  536. I echo what Carrie said. He’s just a more filled-out and longer-haired version of who he was as a newborn. All that adds up to even more adorable and edible than he started!!

  537. sayra

Wow, it takes a long time to scroll to the bottom of all of these comments.
I started reading your blog when I was pregnant with my first kid and had my daughter the day before you had Jacob. Hard to believe it’s been 3 years. Thanks for providing some really entertaining reading and food inspirations. Wish you were coming to Edmonton for the book tour – I feel like you’re an old friend!

  538. One year old! And now that you have a one year old I would be more than glad to take a 3am feeding for this little gem of advice: you’ll be a great mom as long as you love your child. :D Congratulations (for the 2726th time) and as a mom of two boys… HIDE THE DIAPER RASH CREAM! Haha!

  539. Charlotte in Toronto

I’m 5 1/2 years late to the party. I came upon this post while doing “Surprise Me”. I’m so glad I arrived here. He is a perfect baby whose grown in to a precious little boy. Someday he’ll be a handsome young man. You’ve been blessed. Congratulations.

  540. Margo

Hi Deb! I’ve been following SK for many years now but somehow never saw these delicious photos of wee Jacob! Must be hard to wrap your mind around the fact that your tiny newborn is now officially a teen, my goodness time flies! Given your amazing creative skills, I’m not surprised you produced such a gorgeous little boy, absolutely beautiful!! 🥰 Hopefully by now he’s discovered the joys of a sleep in, lol!
