Seeing as I wanted to use up some fruit, I decided to mangle this recipe into a part-fruitcake, part-loaf vehicle. I cut 3 small plums and half a large Cortland to a large dice, halved this recipe and made an obscene amount of substitutions based on what I had available. The brown sugar turned into regular sugar with a drizzle of molasses, all of the (wonderful-sounding) spices translated into cinnamon and a little garam masala, the baking powder disappeared (as it did from my cupboard probably over a month ago), and the orange liqueur became extra OJ and a tiny splash of Marsala wine.

Conclusion: with a recipe this good, even I (and my affinity for meddling) can't mess it up.

I can't wait--it's in the oven and the house smells amazing! I'm going to make this for Thanksgiving because this is the smell I want to greet my guests when they enter the house. It will build up the anticipation.

Further to my post above - this recipe did not disappoint. I took it to a pot luck brunch with other new mums from my office. As I left, one enquired what was in it and, when I said it was a 'date/orange/spice loaf', she said "but I don't like dates", paused, contemplated for a second and then "maybe I do"... So there you are - a recipe good enough to convert staunch date-haters. (They do exist - gasp!) Also - I would highly recommend the cream cheese/orange rind mix that Deb refers to at the end of the post. It was the perfect accompaniment to this delicious, delectable, totally to be repeated loaf. A new fave and probably my new 'go to' fruit loaf. Well, until summer comes back to the antipodes and I get to try the zucchini loaf you refer to in this post.

Deb, if I make this loaf one week in advance (of my husband's graduation & family brunch), will it freeze well? Thank you!

Absolutely delicious. I'm upset I didn't try it sooner. I soaked the dates in rum with a little bit of orange juice (voila! orange flavoured liquor). I only had whole cloves so I didn't use any in the loaf. I didn't find the nutmeg overpowering at all. I don't like fruit cake so this will definitely be my go to holiday bread. The smell is wonderful!
