groundhog day
All week, Alex has been sick with a cough, cold and scary-high fever, so it should be little surprise that I am now, too. What a sorry sight we are! Somewhere in the marriage contract should be a requirement that only one of us is sick at a time, or who will wait on us hand and foot? Anyone? Hello? [Radio silence.] Germophobes.
Nevertheless, this is a great time to catch up on some housekeeping, especially because I can do it from the sofa while Martha shows some beefy guys how to make brats-in-blankets–beefy guys, bratwurst… I’m starting to feel better already!
Death By Chocolate: Remember that Napa trip you sent us on last summer? Well, the good folks at Culinate are at it again and this time they want to send one food blogger and one reader on a trip for two to Napa Valley to attend the Copia Center’s annual Death by Chocolate Festival on Feburary 23, 2008 for a day of chocolate and wine tasting, demonstrations by pastry chefs and other sessions with chocolate junkies like yourself.
Having spent a few days at Copia, let me tell you, this trip will rock your face off. That place is stunning and the people who work there are some of the kindest I have met. The winning reader will be chosen at random. To enter as a food blogger, submit a recipe you feel fits the Death By Chocolate theme before February 8 on Culinate’s web site. The winning entry will be chosen by a panel of judges including yours truly, and yes I can be plied with bribes flattering remarks about my hair er, I mean, chicken noodle soup. [Edited to add: Thanks to all who have nominated smittenkitchen.com–we are very flattered, seeing as we won last year and are judging this year, we’re not running.]
Adopt-a-Blogger: I bet you didn’t know this, we’ve just adopted someone–our very first food blogger! For real. Her name is The Gastronomist and, just like someone else we may know, she loves to obsessively photograph everything she cooks. She’s got some recipes on her site I am just itching to try, from this Shiitake Lemongrass Miso soup, Chicken Marsala with Fresh Fettucini and, most pertinent for our current condition, Matzo Ball Soup. Yes, please! Head on over and say hi.
Oh, and That Game Thing: I hear there’s some, like, big game this weekend? Here are some things I’d love to serve, uh, if I were getting off the sofa this weekend:
- Black Bean Confetti Salad
- Chicken Tacos
- Fish Tacos
- Salsa Fresca
- Hoisin and Honey Pork Riblets
- Fried Chicken
- Soft Pretzels
- Creamy Baked Mac-and-Cheese
- Onion Pizza
- Pizza Margarita
- White Bean Roasted Red Pepper Dip
- Paula Wolfert’s Hummus
- Blue Cheese Dip
- Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
- Hot and Smoky Baked Beans
- Deb’s Three-Bean Chili
- Red Bean Chili
- Corn Bread with Cheddar, Jalapenos and Green Onions
- Peanut Butter Brownies
- Hello Dolly Bars
Go Giants!
In closing, presented without comment: Groundhog Stew.

Feel better soon! This is a perfect weekend to be housebound! There’s lots to watch on TV! Eat CHICKEN SOUP — it’s the best medicine!
Adding the step “Remove glands” to a recipe really makes it sound so appetizing. Poor Phil.
Feel better soon!
I’ll be emailing you a biiiig bowl of chicken soup…
Hope you both are feeling better soon!
I hope you feel better VERY soon! I’m off to the grocery store - going to make the black bean confetti salad and the hello dolly bars for the game. YUM.
Cough + Fever = Flu, not cold! Take good care of yourself, since this year is a nasty flu. No much more you can do for flu than cold except rest even more, and if the fever is higher than 103 for more than a few days go see a doc. Feel better, and make some beef pot roast! Mmmmm pot roast…
Get better soon! I’d make you chicken soup but I don’t think that would FedEx too well. Maybe you need to do an Irish Car Bomb with Joce?
Liquids - drink lots of liquids… If I lived there, I’d come take care of you - I’m great with sick people! Feel better!
Awww, you guys are sick =(
Advice 1: put a thermos next to the couch and drink tea. all. day. aim for six kettles
Advice 2: eat spicy things. Hot sauce and powdered cayenne don’t cut it - buy, wash, freeze five serrano peppers and pulverize them (seeds and all) into everything you eat.
Advice 3: chop ginger into your soup, it’s a good habit to have.
Get better!

Get better soon! What a great round-up of recipes for a weekend—lots of “winning” good eats.
Awww, feel better soon! I’m a little bummed that there will be no Superbowl cooking from your kitchen…I was looking forward to a good football post from you. And I feel like you had been bringing the Giants some luck in the playoffs…I hope they can still pull it off!
PS…we just made your fried chicken and cornbread…fabulous!
Feel better.
By the way, words fail to describe the beautiful wonder that is your hair. : )
looks like you like the same things as i like in your chicken soup!
my dad always adds lots of dill, and keeps the chicken flavor very light.
i pick out the meat, but, despite being otherwise vegetarian, i can’t resist my dad’s chicken soup with matzoh balls!
get better!
Depending on what sort of cold you have yelling vigorously and with attitude at the germs who dared invade your system might help…..Just a working theory I have……
Oh, oh, beautiful pictures as per usual.
Get well soon! Chicken soup w/ matzo balls.
Frankly I am GLAD you aren’t doing a Super Bowl blog edition! If I see one more recipe for chicken wings or spinach dip on a blog I am going to scream.
but i am quite sorry you’re sick!
poor deb, please blog about your chicken soup when you’re done.
it looks lovely, and everyone seems to have there own version.
get well soon!
Feel better! Something nearly wiped out my office last week. The good news is all of the girls are excited about the weight loss. So sad. So sad. I don’t know if we had the flu or a cold. Go Pats! (I’m a Cowboys fan and the NYG are surpassed in hatred only by the Redskins.)
Hi Deb! Here’s hoping you and Alex start feeling better SOON.
Just dropping in to say that it was a joy and delight to see you mentioned in this month’s Redbook. I was reading while at the gym, and saw a list of food blogs, and when I saw “www.smittenkitchen.com” I was tempted to shriek with joy! (Luckily for all the folks on large pieces of equipment and/or using weights…I restrained myself.)
I thought for a minute you meant you were catching up on actual housekeeping, and I became very, very ashamed that I have spent the whole weekend in perfect health and haven’t yet managed to do any cleaning/dusting/tidying. Nonetheless, hope you’re recovering soon.
I could look at your pictures for hours. Hope you guys feel better soon! - Lisa
Thanks again for participating! I hope you and your adoptee are hitting it off :)
I hope you’re feeling better soon - and fair warning - the only thing worse than both of you being sick is when you are both sick AND you’ve got a kid who is sick or well. All three people crying for a mom to walk through the door and take care of everyone. Oh, it’s horrible. The grapefruit peels look amazing. Feel better soon.

Wow . . . that’s all I can say about your photograph of grapes! I’m in the running for the Death by Chocolate contest. I can only hope that photographing Napa grapes is in my future!
yum, yum. i’m not even sick and i would love to eat that soup! but not as much as i would love to win a trip to napa…
The photos of the salsa and bean salad make me so happy.
Feel better! I hope you watched some of the Puppy Bowl, that always makes me feel better.
- Us vs. Food
You and your cake were sorely missed at last night super bowl party. Alas, Molly went over to Venerios and got us some treats.
Feel better!
Hope you’re feeling a lot better today.
Those grapes look absolutely divine.
Need a little ’sick’ humor to help pass the time? (It’s not that sick, just silly).
The man-cold video:

No offense to your beloved, I’m sure he’s a stellar care-giver : )
I love that video! Of course, I think I’m the one with the Man Cold right now. ;)
