mango margaritas + blood orange martinis
They always say, write about what you know and I know how to make a good cocktail. My favorite is the Blood Orange Martini, a very popular drink over here at the Barbie Dream Loft where I reside in NY’s fabulous Williamsburg.
I start by juicing the oranges:

In a cocktail shaker mix Grey Goose Vodka, Triple Sec and fresh squeezed Blood Orange Juice. Shake and serve with a lime!
Another classic is the Margarita. Who doesn’t love them? Must be made with really good tequila that you bring back from Mexico, or I usually go with Sauza Tequila, mixed with triple sec and Sauza makes a really good margarita mix, if you can’t make your own. Add lots of lemon & lime slices, best when made by the pitcher:

And for a twist I often make Mango Margarita’s substituting Mango juice for margarita mix that you can get at your local bodega, or maybe a spanish food store if you don’t have bodega’s. Instead of putting salt on the rim of the glass I put sugar, because I am so smart.

Finally I have to say that Williams Sonoma makes the best Apple Martini mix. I got one for x-mas from a friend and it was outstanding. So no matter where you are you can visit their website and order some for your Dream Loft and go nuts! They also have a green sugar substance to put on the rim!
Ok, go Party!

Oh wow, Jocelyn, deb is so lucky to have a friend like you. Can I have one of each?
You had me at Mango Margarita’s. You had me at Mango.
Oh YUM!!
Hey, a good frozen marg tip is to use Lime-Aid. Everyone I know swears by it (and these are Texans), and you can find it at any grocery store…errr bodega. Also, add a little orange juice to cut some of the tartness. Party on!
Thanks Suki. I will definately try the OJ trick.!
Wow, what a neat juicer. And I’m going to check my Williams Sonoma (I have one down the street which is great for my kitchen–bad for my wallet!) for the apple martini mix. I love them but hadn’t found a good mix for dinner parties at home. Thanks Jocelyn!
Tell me about it, I just spent $200 on a Wok. A freakin WOK! I don’t even really know how to cook??!! What is wrong with me?

Hmmmmmm blood oranges. Wa’s with that foamy stuff there Joc? strain the juice thru a cheese cloth, if you like pulp, or mesh strainer, if ya don’t. Much better.
How I would love to party in the dream loft.
Especially since then I would be in NY, and not FL.
Sigh.
Deb – You’ve lost me here. What a poor choice of blog-sitter for a previously really fine, well written food blog. Wow! What an incredibly unfunny, uninteresting bore this bloggy-sat week has been.
Come on everybody, quick…lets all go read Laura\’s well written funny blog about her really interesting life!!
Oh wait, she doesn\’t have one. Sigh.
Man can’t live on food alone… so let’s have cocktails! And yours even look healthy… fresh squeezed juice, after all..
Laura is a party pooper.
I hear Laura eats babies
Even Emeril has guest Chef’s.. Joc is a Guest Chef and has done a great job. You dont like it, dont read. No need to leave such a foul comment.
someone takes themselves way too seriously.
Joc, we love you! I think that you have been an excellent bloggysitter while our beloved Deb has been sunning herself on the beaches with no thought to those of us stuck at home. You are welcome back anytime!

Dixie: I am actually the guest blogger and I am from Brooklyn. Debbie lives on Manhattan fabulous west side in Chelsea. She\’s coming back from Mexico this weekend so it will be back to regular exceptional cooking programming soon. You can get more of me on Pixxiestails.com thats my blog about music and my life in Brooklyn. Ciao!
Cupcake\’s & Jessica: Thanks ladies, I thought I did a great job–and I only alienated one Smitten Kitchen reader. That\’s amazing! Cheers!
i think laura needs to get laid.
rock on joc!! (two hands with the devil signs on that one…)
OMG…Jocelyn, I’m a Le Creuset WHORE! I have gotten three pieces since February. Thankfully, fabu boyfriend bought me my first two. I did get a baking pan that matches your wok. Now, how do I get him to get me the wok??? No really significant holidays until December. Any ideas on how to scheme are much appreciated!
Hurt yourself, or feign illness. Cry a lot. Then pull up the wok on the Williams Sonoma website and state how much better it makes you feel just by looking at it. Then tell him how many amazing stir fry meals you can cook for him. Hope that works. If he doesn\’t go for it you can always break up with him? ok, good luck.
Ciao
Tracy,
Poor Laura. Your right. I am starting to feel sorry for her. She should really look within and find her source of unhappiness and then try to heal herself and then move on. So sad.
ciao
i see girls and i see martinis…..hey why wasn’t i invited !
I thinking someones wheels have been turning but the hamster died! You are so lucky to have a good friendlike Deb and she will come home and simply absolve you of any smacking goin on in smitten.
You are such a great blog sitter. Looks like you are partying while the cat’s away :)
Love these drink recipes.
Hilarious! I came over here because I was told at the opening of the BDL Skybar this evening that there was a some wretched hag named Laura who didn’t appreciate Jocelyn’s bloggysitting efforts. I think I know someone who could use a blood orange martini and a handful of Xanax! Why must everyone be so negative?
I bought blood oranges today, so I could make your cocktail. :)
The best tequila I have found is 1800–you should try it if you haven’t! You pay for the quality, but when it comes to tequila, it’s worth it. Also, Juicy Juice now makes mango juice (100% juice!), and we can get it at our average local grocery store with all of the other juices.
Combine the two! Blood orange margaritas:
1 part Cointreau
1 part lime juice
1 part Blood Orange juice
3 parts tequilia (NOT A TYPO)
Combine, sip. Yum. Straight up with salt is my favorite, but I’m usually too lazy to do the salt thing.
As for tequilia, Patron is my preference. There’s usually Hornitos in the freezer, however — Patron is a little pricy.
